A top Russian military official, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, was killed in a bomb explosion in Moscow, an attack claimed by Ukraine’s security service (SBU).
Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiological, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, had been accused of ordering the use of banned chemical weapons during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The bomb, planted in an electric scooter and remotely detonated, also killed his assistant and marks the highest-ranking Russian official to be assassinated since the war began.
Ukraine’s SBU called Kirillov a “legitimate target,” signaling a strategic shift toward targeting senior Russian military personnel to unsettle Russia’s leadership.
Russia has launched an investigation, labeling the incident a “terrorist act.
