Labasa to Host 146th Girmit Commemoration Day in May

The 146th Girmit Day Commemoration will be held in Labasa from May 10 to 12, 2025, with an additional event planned for May 11 in Savusavu.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs & Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, confirmed the event will take place at Subrail Park, with preparations already underway.

The ministry is focusing on key initiatives such as documenting Girmit stories, digitizing historical records, creating a Girmit Database, and establishing a Girmit Museum.

A collection drive for Girmit-related artefacts and resources is also being organized.

A Girmit working committee has been formed, comprising key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in the North, to oversee the three-day program in Labasa.

The commemoration aims to honor the legacy of Girmitiyas and preserve their history for future generations.
