Opposition Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj has publicly thrown his support behind growing calls for Members of Parliament to undergo mandatory drug testing — and has volunteered to be the first to take the test.

Speaking exclusively to Duavata News, Hon. Maharaj stated:

"The people have spoken, and I agree. As leaders, we should set an example and be the first to submit ourselves to drug tests to ensure that we are fit and proper to be leaders of the nation."

"To that effect, I will be the first to submit to a drug test," he confirmed.

Maharaj urged Parliament to organise and implement the testing framework and called on his fellow Members of Parliament to support the initiative, saying accountability must start at the top.

His comments follow earlier remarks by aspiring politician Ratu Sailosi Sirisirivalu, a member of the proposed FijiansFirst Party, who called on Members of Parliament, the security forces, and civil servants to voluntarily undergo drug testing, especially in light of recent calls for secondary school athletes competing at the Coca-Cola Games to be tested.

"We cannot have a double standard where school children are subjected to testing while those in positions of power are not," Sirisirivalu had said.

Maharaj’s comments add momentum to this growing call by the public for more to be done against drugs.
