The community of Lomawai witnessed a historic moment as the Honourable Dr. Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu officially opened the new desalination plant at the Lomawai Health Centre.

The plant, which converts seawater into fresh drinking water, will ensure that the health centre has a constant and safe water supply.

This development is expected to improve hygiene, healthcare services, and the overall wellbeing of patients and staff.

Dr. Lalabalavu called the new plant a symbol of progress, saying, “Clean water is a basic human right and vital for health, this project ensures that the Lomawai Health Centre can provide safe and reliable care for the community.”

The project was made possible through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Jacks Group of Companies, which funded the plant.

Dr. Lalabalavu thanked the Jacks Group for their support, as well as the engineers, technicians, and planners who made the project a reality.

The plant addresses a long-standing challenge of providing clean water to rural and coastal areas like Lomawai. It also reflects the government’s broader efforts to build stronger and more resilient healthcare systems, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change.

The new desalination plant will not only benefit the health centre but also support the surrounding communities by reducing the risks of waterborne diseases and ensuring access to clean water.

“This is the start of a brighter future for Lomawai,” Dr. Lalabalavu said. “The health centre can now serve its people with better resources and greater confidence.”

The event highlighted the importance of clean water in healthcare and marked a significant step forward for Lomawai and its residents.
