The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has started testing portable speed cameras across Fiji to help stop speeding and reckless driving.

This move is part of the Ministry of Transport’s efforts to reduce road accidents and save lives. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa warned that drivers caught breaking speed limits could have their licenses suspended or even cancelled. Repeat offenders may also face legal action.

“Last year, 66 people died in road accidents, slightly fewer than 78 in 2023. But the number is still too high, with speeding causing 40% of all road deaths in 2024,” Mr. Rokosawa said.

The new portable cameras will help LTA monitor speed in high-risk areas, making sure drivers follow the rules. The cameras work day and night, capturing speed violations accurately.

Drivers can expect to see these cameras in both expected and unexpected locations, ensuring constant enforcement. The goal is not just to punish but to encourage safer driving habits.

Besides enforcing laws, LTA is also focusing on public awareness and driver education to create a culture of responsible driving.

Testing of the portable speed cameras has already started in the Central Division, with other areas to follow soon.
