The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has acknowledged public concerns raised following a viral video on social media, showing the inspection of bus cards and the subsequent issuance of fixed penalties under the Electronic Fare Ticketing (Omnibus) Regulations 2017.
In response to these concerns, LTA has reassured the public that it is working to resolve the issues surrounding the e-ticketing system.
The introduction of the e-ticketing system was a significant step towards modernizing Fiji’s public transport sector.
It aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and convenience in fare collection.
'LTA recognizes that some challenges persist, particularly for people in rural areas who have limited access to top-up services for their bus cards' says LTA Chief Executive Officer Mr Rokowasa.
In addressing these issues, LTA has been actively engaging with the vendor and other stakeholders to ensure improvements in the system.
The Authority’s immediate priority is to make top-up services more widely available, both in rural and urban areas, to make the system more accessible for all passengers. Additionally,
'LTA is focusing on improving technical support to resolve operational disruptions in the e-ticketing system' says Mr Rokowasa
LTA is also reviewing public feedback to enhance the system’s functionality and ensuring that the regulations, particularly regarding fare payments and the inspection of bus cards, are upheld.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public as we work collaboratively with the service provider to resolve these issues and ensure a reliable, efficient, and equitable e-ticketing system for everyone,” said Mr. Irimaia Rokosawa
