Opposition Member of Parliament Hon. Alvick Maharaj has criticised the government over the recent hike in Rewa Butter prices, calling it “another blow to the pockets of ordinary families.”

In a strongly worded statement, Maharaj expressed concern over the decision by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to approve price increases of up to 13.9%.

A quarter-pound of Rewa Butter now costs $4.00, up from $3.51, while the price of a half-pound has risen to $7.94, and a 500-gram packet now retails at $15.93.

“This is simply unacceptable,” Maharaj said, questioning the justification provided by the FCCC, which cited a 16% increase in the landing cost of bulk raw butter. He argued that Rewa Butter is made from locally sourced milk, and questioned whether the prices paid to local dairy farmers had increased by the same margin.

“This is not a luxury item; it’s a staple for many,” he said. “When the cost of an essential item like butter goes up, it impacts every household, every child’s breakfast, every family’s meal.”

Maharaj accused the government of failing to shield consumers from rising living costs and called on them to explore subsidies or targeted relief to offset the price hikes. “The government has a moral obligation to provide relief and maintain the current prices,” he added.

He urged the government to review the decision immediately and consider measures to protect low and middle-income families from further economic strain.
