Opposition member of Parliament, Alvick Maharaj, has issued a strong call for increased investment in Fiji’s agricultural sector, backing a proposed $250 million budget allocation aimed at transforming the industry.

In a media release issued by Maharaj, he emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Fiji’s economy and urged for a shift from subsistence farming to semi-commercial and commercial farming.

“I fully support the recent call from the Minister of Agriculture for a budget allocation of $250 million,” Maharaj stated. “While we acknowledge the importance of other sectors, agriculture holds deep historical and economic significance for Fiji, dating back to the era when Girmitiyas were brought to the country to cultivate sugarcane.”

Maharaj highlighted the urgent need to support farmers, especially those in the sugarcane industry who are currently facing multiple challenges.

He called for strengthened assistance to cash crop farmers transitioning into commercial agriculture as a key step toward achieving long-term sustainability and economic growth.

“The Ministry of Finance should facilitate the requested $250 million allocation in the upcoming budget to ensure the continued development of Fiji’s agricultural sector,” Maharaj concluded.
