Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry visited the Nausori Market yesterday, meeting with vendors and farmers to listen to their concerns and highlight the need for improved public services within the market complex.

He was accompanied by Mr. Umakant Patel, former Administrator of the Nausori Town Council, and businessman Mr. Narayan Prasad. Both are senior officials of the Party’s Nausori Branch.

The delegation was welcomed by Market Master Mr. Inia Nabulagi, who provided an update on market operations. He confirmed that ceiling and exhaust fans are scheduled to be installed soon to enhance ventilation for both vendors and customers.

During the visit, vendors raised several ongoing issues, including inadequate lighting. They called on the Council to replace broken lights and increase lighting in darker areas of the market.

Concerns were also voiced about the poor condition of public toilets. Vendors say the facilities are not cleaned regularly and require urgent maintenance to meet hygiene standards.

Waste disposal is another pressing issue. Currently, vendors are left to manage rubbish themselves, a responsibility they believe should be handled by the Town Council through employed cleaning staff.

Mr. Patel urged the Ministry of Health to conduct regular inspections of the market to ensure it complies with public health regulations.

Security also emerged as a key concern. Vendors cited repeated disturbances from intoxicated individuals entering the premises and compromising the safety of both vendors and customers. They are calling for the deployment of security guards or a formal partnership with police to safeguard the market.

Mr. Chaudhry assured vendors that he would take their concerns to the appropriate authorities and monitor progress on their resolution.
