Man Arrested for Public Drinking; Police Probe Use of Force After Video Surfaces

The Fiji Police Force has confirmed the arrest of an 18-year-old man seen in a video circulating on social media, in connection with a case of drinking liquor in a public place on the night of Monday, 30th June 2025.
Police officers were deployed to the scene after receiving information about an individual allegedly consuming alcohol in a public area. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
According to police, the man allegedly resisted arrest and sustained injuries in the process, as captured in the video.
He was later taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for treatment and was discharged following medical clearance.
Totogo Police are awaiting the suspect’s full medical report before proceeding with questioning as investigations continue.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said concerns raised over the conduct of the officers involved will be addressed. He also urged members of the public to comply with police instructions when approached.
“Numerous warnings have been issued regarding drinking in public places. If people continue to disregard these warnings, police will enforce the law accordingly, as such actions pose a significant safety and security risk to others,” Tudravu said.
He reiterated that the Fiji Police Force remains committed to restoring public trust and confidence through professional and ethical conduct.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any concerns to their nearest police station or community post.
The Commissioner assured that if any officer is found to have abused their authority, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
