A 28-year-old man allegedly involved in a sacrilege incident in Samabula has been charged.

He faces one count of sacrilege and one count of throwing an object.

Police confirm that the accused will be produced at the Suva Magistrates Court tomorrow.

In response to concerns raised about the handling of the investigation, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said a medical evaluation was sought to ensure all processes—particularly those related to the rights of an arrested person—were followed before charges were laid.

“The Fiji Police Force’s priority is to ensure the conduct of an impartial investigation in accordance with proper procedures, where the rights of the suspect must be upheld,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

He also expressed concern over the spread of hateful rhetoric surrounding the case and called for public tolerance, stressing that the investigation—not speculation—would determine the motive behind the incident.
