Explosive winger and former Flying Fijian Manasa Mataele is set to return home and don the Fijian Drua jersey for the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season—marking his 10th season in the competition.

Originally from Vanuavatu, Lau with maternal ties to Yasawa-i-Rara, Mataele grew up in Raiwai, Suva and attended Marist Brothers High School, where he first made his mark on the local rugby scene.

Now 28, Mataele brings with him 58 Super Rugby caps—32 for the Crusaders, 24 for the Western Force, and two with the Chiefs.

A proven finisher and line-breaker, he was ranked second in the 2022 season for clean breaks and metres gained.

“I’m feeling excited and really looking forward to representing the Drua next season,” Mataele said.

Fijian Drua General Manager of Rugby, Baden Stephenson, welcomed the signing, highlighting Mataele’s professionalism and game-breaking abilities.

“Manasa is a quality player who has been in good programs and knows what success looks like. His experience and communication will be vital for our young backline.”

Mataele made his debut for the Flying Fijians in 2021 and has four test caps.

He has also featured in 51 New Zealand provincial matches—31 for Canterbury and 20 for Taranaki.
