As part of its commitment to sustainability and community involvement, the Marist Rugby Club kicked off the 2025 International Day of Forests (IDOF) tree planting initiative at Naivucini village in Naitasiri last Saturday (08.3.25).

This event aims to enhance local biodiversity, combat climate change, and promote teamwork and community spirit among the players, supporters, and volunteers of the club.

Marist Rugby Club President, Mr. Lawrence Tikaram said the message behind their participation in the tree planting program is being able to do things for those who are in need of more.

“By planting all these seedlings, will bring sustainability development to the villagers of Naivucini and also to the beautiful province of Naitasiri,” Mr. Tikaram said.

“It was a very enjoyable task, every single minute of it. A wonderful experience, and we hope to be back to do more,” he said.

The team along with officers from the Ministry of Forestry had to walk 2.2km from the village, crossing two tributaries of the Wainimala River to reach the planting site.

By participating in the IDOF 2025 tree planting, the club not only champions environmental sustainability but also reinforces their commitment to community engagement and team spirit.

IDOF is celebrated annually on March 21 and is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of forests and trees in our lives and for the health of the planet.

This year’s celebration will be held at Naivucini in Naitasiri and the theme ‘forests and foods’ is the theme for the day, celebrating the crucial roles of forests in food security, nutrition and livelihoods.
