Residents of Mayotte describe “apocalyptic scenes” after Cyclone Chido, the worst storm in 90 years, brought 225 km/h (140 mph) winds, flattening homes and leaving thousands without water, food, or power.

French President Emmanuel Macron pledged support and will visit the island soon. Officials fear the death toll could reach thousands, particularly among vulnerable communities living in makeshift shelters.

Damaged infrastructure is hampering rescue efforts, with 85% of the island still without electricity.

Aid workers call the situation “chaotic,” while concerns grow over food shortages and disease outbreaks.

The cyclone also hit Mozambique, causing floods and widespread destruction.

Experts say climate change is driving stronger storms like Chido.
