Shocking allegations have emerged as part of an ongoing police investigation, with a complainant claiming that officers at the Lautoka Police Station were given servings of McDonald’s and, in return, allowed civilians to access evidence held in police custody.

According to the complaint, high-ranking members of Fiji’s football community were allegedly sharing private messages from a phone held as police evidence and allegedly using them in a campaign to intimidate their critics.

The Fiji Football Association also falsely posted on its Facebook page that arrests had been made when no arrests had been made, police have confirmed.

Last week, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that an investigation is underway on the case relating to a case involving the Ba Football Association, but said police could not comment on the specifics while inquiries were ongoing.

Under the Crimes Act, the penalty for bribing a public official can carry a custodial sentence of up to 10 years.
