The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School commemorated the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this morning with a special celebration.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, played as a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence, led non-violent protests against British rule that inspired numerous freedom fighters across the globe.

At the celebrations, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran mentioned that Gandhi led nationwide campaigns on human rights and justice, working on easing poverty, expanding women's rights and abolishing untouchability.

Kiran praised Gandhi’s ability to motivate the nation during challenging times by promoting a life of simplicity and encouraging collective action toward independence.

She remarked on the importance of embodying qualities such as forgiveness, compassion, sincerity, contentment, and truthfulness.

"Before we can practice these values with others, we must first cultivate them within ourselves," Kiran stated.

She expressed optimism that through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, communities can heal from past wounds and collaborate with a renewed mindset.

Kiran also referenced Gandhi’s famous quote: "Our greatest ability as humans is not to change the world, but to change ourselves."

She emphasized the importance of Gandhi’s principle of non-violence in daily life, particularly in how we communicate with those around us.
