Food stalls and minibus stands in Suva are becoming hotspots for drug-related activities, raising growing concerns among local officials and residents.

The Suva City Council (SCC) is now facing pressure to take action and work with the police to make the city safer, cleaner, and drug-free.

This issue was highlighted by SCC Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa in response to questions from Ioane Naivalurua, a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs.

Naivalurua emphasized that drug-related issues need to be included in future SCC reports.

He said the situation cannot be allowed to continue unchecked, pointing out that frequent police raids show the problem is still very serious and ongoing.

In response, Boseiwaqa confirmed that the SCC is reviewing its policies to better tackle the drug issue.

He said the council plans to conduct on-the-ground checks to confirm the situation, with food stalls and minibus stands being identified as key areas of concern by worried Suva residents.

Boseiwaqa stressed that part of the solution involves holding business owners accountable and ensuring that the city becomes a safer place for everyone.

He also mentioned that the SCC is actively working with the police to address the problem and make Suva a drug-free city.
