Minister for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh has called for the public flogging of those who deal or are alleged to have dealt with illicit drugs.

Speaking in Parliament, Singh said this should be done to teach people a lesson.

He suggested that if offenders do not learn, further measures could be taken. While opposing the death penalty, he stated that only God has the authority to take life.

Singh made these remarks in response to Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma, who called for the reintroduction of the death penalty.

The proposal has sparked debate, with some supporting tougher penalties while human rights groups condemn it as inhumane and unlawful.

Legal experts argue such measures would require constitutional amendments and face strong opposition. Meanwhile, police continue their crackdown on drug-related crimes.
