The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Honourable Sashi Kiran, continued her Northern Division visit this week with engagements focused on empowering rural women.

Minister Kiran met with the Bua Soqosoqo Vakamarama where she was warmly welcomed by the Roko Tui Bua and close to 30 men and women, including staff from the Bua District Office, the Department of Women and the Department of Children.

Following the traditional presentation of the iSevusevu, the Minister held a talanoa session where women openly shared some of the challenges they face, including transportation difficulties, the need for greater public health awareness and financial literacy support.

Concerns were also raised about the increasing number of teenage pregnancies, as well as the impact of drugs and HIV and AIDS within communities.

Minister Kiran acknowledged the issues raised and assured the women that the Ministry will continue working closely with the women of Bua District to identify ways to provide support in key areas.

She emphasised that women play a critical role in supporting their families, strengthening communities and contributing to the local economy.

The visit concluded with a stop at the Bua Soqosoqo Vakamarama kiosk at the new bus bay at Nabouwalu Jetty, where the Minister encouraged women to consider producing smaller and lighter handicraft items that tourists can easily carry while travelling.

These could include keychains, fridge magnets, coasters, table runners, small woven baskets and decorative items made from traditional materials such as voivoi and masi.

Minister Kiran reminded the women that their culture and skills are valuable and encouraged them to continue supporting one another while building better opportunities for their families and communities.
