The Minister for Youth and Sports has responded to recent criticisms from boxing advocate Sebastian Singh, rejecting claims that the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the death of boxer Ubayd Haidar was a "waste of time."

The Minister clarified that the COI report, tabled in Parliament on April 29, was the result of months of detailed investigations and stakeholder consultations, despite delays caused by the unavailability of some witnesses.

"The report represents the findings of the Commission following extensive interviews and consultations. It provided an important avenue for Fijians to voice concerns, present evidence, and ensure action is taken to protect our athletes," the Minister said.

Dismissing Singh’s allegation that he had undermined the inquiry process, the Minister stated: “At no point did I say the interviews were a ‘waste of time.’ Mr. Singh is welcome to engage with the COI directly on that matter.”

He also extended an invitation to Singh to work collaboratively with the Ministry to improve boxing and athlete welfare in Fiji, noting, “While I respect Mr. Singh’s views, constructive engagement is the way forward.”

The Minister paid tribute to Ubayd Haidar, calling him “a talented boxer who carried the hopes of his family, his supporters, and the nation,” and reiterated the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to athlete safety and development.

“We remain committed to strengthening Fiji’s sporting landscape and ensuring the wellbeing of every athlete,” he said.

The Commission of Inquiry was established in the wake of Haidar’s tragic death to examine systemic failures and recommend safeguards for the future.
