The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has highlighted progress made in strengthening workers’ rights in Fiji.

Speaking at the Pacific Islands Council of Trade Unions (PICTU) Solidarity, Coordination and Information Sharing Meeting in Nadi, Singh said Fiji has made significant improvements since 2022.

“We have restored dignity in the workplace. Workers can now speak freely, organise, and be part of national decision-making without fear,” he said.

He said key reforms include aligning labour laws with international standards, reintroducing the national minimum wage, and improving dialogue between government, employers and unions.

The Minister also acknowledged ongoing challenges, including the need to strengthen protection for migrant workers and improve union representation in the informal sector.

Two major labour laws — the Employment Relations Bill and the Work Care Bill — are currently before the Parliamentary Standing Committee and are expected to be tabled in the next sitting of Parliament.

Singh also highlighted the impact of climate change on workers across the Pacific.

“From extreme weather to rising temperatures, climate change is already affecting workplaces. We must work together to ensure a resilient transition for workers,” he said.

Fiji will host regional labour meetings in May, bringing Pacific leaders together to address shared challenges and strengthen cooperation.
