The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has initiated a comprehensive nationwide review of the Mental Health Act 2010, marking a significant step in strengthening mental health systems in Fiji.

The review aims to align Fiji’s mental health legislation with international human rights standards, ensuring services are inclusive, people-centered, and community-based.

Jointly led by St. Giles Hospital and the National Wellness Centre (NWC), the process is coordinated by the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Unit at the NWC, with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Office.

The first round of internal consultations has been completed across all four divisions, engaging healthcare professionals to identify challenges and recommend practical improvements. Special acknowledgment goes to Dr. Jiang Long, WHO Technical Officer for Mental Health, and consultant Kelly Whelan for their support.

The next phase will involve external consultations with stakeholders to ensure a participatory approach that reflects real-world community needs.
