The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has released a statement regarding two separate incidents involving foreign airline crew members in Nadi.
The alleged crimes, which occurred early Wednesday morning in a nightclub area, include an alleged theft and an alleged rape, with two different crew members reportedly affected.
Police have questioned a suspect in connection with the alleged rape, and investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
The Ministry expressed concern for the victims’ well-being, confirming that the crew members are in good health and are staying at a local hotel, their designated accommodation during layovers.
Contrary to reports by some international media, the Ministry clarified that the crew members are not detained.
The crew is expected to return home by the end of the week.
Despite the Ministry’s reassurances, public concern about safety is growing, videos of crimes, including assaults, thefts, and other incidents, are appearing on social media almost daily.
This has heightened fears among locals and tourists, many of whom now feel unsafe in public spaces.
The Ministry has urged tourists to exercise caution, particularly in nightclub areas and late at night, while calling on international media to report responsibly and avoid sensationalizing incidents without verified facts.
