The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has strengthened its commitment to improving the lives of Fiji’s senior citizens, ensuring they live with dignity and remain connected to their communities.
Speaking at the Elderly Recreational Day held yesterday in Suva (4 April 2025), Minister Hon. Sashi Kiran highlighted the government’s continued efforts to support the elderly through a range of targeted programs.
“We remain committed to enhancing the lives of our senior citizens,” Hon. Kiran said. “They deserve to live in dignity, with proper care and respect, and remain actively engaged in their communities.”
The Social Pension Scheme remains a key initiative, providing financial assistance to elderly Fijians who do not have access to superannuation or retirement funds, helping to ease their financial burden.
To promote mobility and access to essential services, the Bus Fare Subsidy Program continues to provide affordable transportation for senior citizens, allowing them to maintain their independence and social connections.
The Ministry is also working closely with Aged Care Homes to ensure safe and well-managed environments for elderly residents, where they receive the care and respect they deserve.
Hon. Kiran also emphasised the importance of social inclusion through Community Outreach Programs, which encourage active participation and help keep seniors engaged and connected.
“Our elders have laid the foundation for our communities, and it is our responsibility to honour them by providing the support they need,” she said.
