Ministry Strengthens OHS Inspectors Through Advanced Safety Training
FIJI NEWS

The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has begun a one-week Ultrasonic Testing Level 1 and Radiation Safety Training programme aimed at boosting the technical capacity of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Inspectorates under the National Occupational Health and Safety Service.
The training is being led by Mr David Suede of Kuzer Technical, an experienced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) professional and technical consultant with expertise in inspection, auditing, technical training, and advanced NDT applications across various industrial sectors.
Deputy Secretary Technical, Mr Tomasi Kama, delivered the opening address and said the training reflects the Ministry’s continued focus on strengthening workplace safety standards, improving regulatory capability, and ensuring Fiji’s industries operate at internationally recognised engineering and compliance standards.
He highlighted the importance of Non-Destructive Testing in helping inspectors assess the structural integrity of plants, equipment, and industrial infrastructure without causing damage.
“Non-Destructive Testing is a critical discipline that allows us to assess the structural integrity of equipment and infrastructure without causing damage. Through Ultrasonic Testing, inspectors are able to detect flaws, cracks, and weaknesses early before they escalate into major incidents,” Mr Kama said.
Ultrasonic Testing is considered one of the most effective NDT methods because it can identify internal and surface defects, provide real-time results, and safely inspect thick materials such as pipelines, pressure vessels, and structural components.
Mr Kama said improving the structural soundness of industrial plants and equipment plays a direct role in protecting workers, reducing workplace injuries, limiting operational disruptions, and improving productivity.
“This directly contributes to Fiji’s economic resilience and sustainable growth,” he added.
The Ministry also acknowledged previous support from ATTAR Non-Destructive Testing Training, which helped establish core technical skills among OHS inspectors, while welcoming Kuzer Technical as part of the next phase of advancing inspectorate capability.
The one-week programme combines both theory and practical training, giving inspectors the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to carry out effective inspections and strengthen workplace safety enforcement across Fiji.
The Ministry says it remains committed to continuous professional development and building stronger technical capability within its OHS Inspectorate through specialised training and international partnerships.
