More Fijians will soon have the opportunity to work and train in Japan thanks to a new Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between the two governments this week.

Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Jone Maritino Nemani and Japan’s Commissioner of the Immigration Services Agency, Hideharu Maruyama, formalised the agreement in Tokyo on Thursday, during Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s official visit.

The MoC enables Fijians to participate in Japan’s Technical Intern Training Program, giving them access to world-class skills development and employment opportunities in a highly advanced economy. In return, Fiji will benefit from the transfer of technical skills and knowledge to support long-term workforce development.

Mr. Nemani, known for his steady leadership in expanding labour mobility pathways, said the deal reflects the growing trust and cooperation between Fiji and Japan.

“This agreement will open new doors for our people while supporting Japan’s workforce needs. It’s a partnership based on shared development goals,” he said.

Japan continues to face labour shortages in key industries, and the program offers a structured, well-regulated pathway for Fijians to contribute while gaining valuable skills and experience.

The initiative is also expected to deepen cultural ties and strengthen bilateral relations as Fiji diversifies its employment and training opportunities abroad.
