More Job Opportunities for People with Disabilities
FIJI NEWS

The Government is stepping up efforts to ensure people living with disabilities are not left behind when it comes to employment, with a renewed push to make workplaces across Fiji more inclusive and supportive.
At the heart of the shift, they say, is a simple idea: inclusion must move beyond talk and become part of everyday practice.
Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Jone Maritino Nemani says employment is not just about earning a living, but about dignity, independence, and the ability to fully participate in society.
“Employment is about dignity, independence, and participation in society. We are working to make inclusion a normal part of how businesses operate and not something extra,” he said.
Speaking at a stakeholder workshop in Suva today (14/05/26), Mr Nemani acknowledged that while Fiji has made important progress in disability inclusion, more must be done to ensure workplaces are truly ready to support everyone.
He made it clear that the burden should not fall on individuals with disabilities to adapt.
Instead, he said, it is employers and institutions that must take responsibility for creating environments where people can succeed.
“This is about ensuring our systems, policies, and workplaces are ready to support people with disabilities to succeed,” Mr Nemani said.
As part of the effort, the Government is also looking at expanding pathways into employment, both locally and overseas, including opportunities under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme.
The focus will be on practical changes, raising employer awareness, improving workplace adjustments, and strengthening coordination between government, businesses, and disability organisations.
For many, these changes could mean the difference between being excluded and being given a real chance.
“We are building on what already exists and working together to make inclusive employment business as usual,” Mr Nemani added.
