As Fiji observes the sacred occasion of Easter—a time for reflection and unity—Member of Parliament Premila Kumar has voiced her deep concern over alleged break‑ins and thefts at the Dugapatu Mariamman Temple in Rakiraki and the mosque in Navua.

“These incidents are not only criminal but represent a profound disregard for the sanctity and cultural significance of places of worship that hold deep meaning for our diverse communities,” Kumar said.

“Places of worship are more than just buildings; they are sacred spaces where people seek peace, healing, and spiritual connection. Violating these spaces undermines the principles of religious freedom, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence, which form the bedrock of our democracy and national identity.”

Kumar called on the Fiji Police Force to “intensify their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible,” expressing confidence that “ongoing investigations will lead to swift arrests and appropriate consequences for these unacceptable acts.”

Highlighting the need for collective action, she urged “stronger collaboration between law enforcement, faith‑based organizations, and local communities to ensure that all religious sites are protected and that mutual respect is actively promoted.”

“As we celebrate Easter and its message of hope and renewal, let us also renew our commitment to safeguard religious freedom and stand in solidarity with one another, even as we practice different faiths,” Kumar added. “We must remain united in rejecting any actions that threaten the harmony and respect that bind us as a nation.”
