Mpox Case Confirmed in Marrakech, Morocco
WORLD

The Moroccan Ministry of Health has confirmed the country’s first case of mpox in a man residing in Marrakech. This is the first reported case since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern last month.
The Moroccan health officials have not yet disclosed which variant the patient carries. Currently, the individual is receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities in Morocco are actively tracing and monitoring the health of individuals who have been in close contact with the patient. As of the latest update, none of these contacts have showing symptoms.
Mpox can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, as well as by touching contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing, and towels.
Although the infection often resolves on its own within 2 to 3 weeks, severe cases can result in complications, particularly in vulnerable populations like young children. Serious instances can cause widespread lesions affecting the mouth, eyes, and genitals.
The WHO emphasizes that treatment focuses on managing the rash, alleviating pain, and preventing complications.
In his emergency declaration on August 14, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed the necessity of a coordinated international effort to stop the spread of the virus and save lives.
