Natabua High School has become the first school in Fiji's Western Division to join the School Waste Management Initiative, a programme aimed at strengthening waste separation, composting and recycling practices among students.

Launching the initiative, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, encouraged students to become champions of responsible waste management and environmental protection, saying the habits developed today will help shape Fiji's environmental future.

"Today's students will shape tomorrow's Fiji, and the habits they build today will determine the future of our environment," she said.

Hon. Tabuya told students that the initiative is about more than keeping schools clean, describing it as an opportunity to build lifelong habits that contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable Fiji.

She encouraged students to take simple but meaningful actions such as separating waste, reducing plastic use and supporting recycling efforts.

As part of the programme, the Ministry handed over compost bins, compost bucket bins, gardening spades and forks to support the school's composting and recycling activities.

Natabua High School joins a growing network of schools participating in the initiative, following the involvement of Labasa College in the Northern Division and Suva Grammar School and Ratu Sukuna Memorial School in the Central Division.

The initiative is being delivered through a partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Local Government and the Lautoka City Council.

The programme aims to empower students to become environmental leaders within their schools, homes and communities while helping to build environmentally responsible communities across Fiji.
