National Consultation on Repealing Automatic Progression in Schools
FIJI NEWS

The Ministry of Education has announced a National Consultation to discuss the potential repeal of the Automatic Progression policy in schools.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which aims for all children to complete free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education by 2030.
Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, highlighted that Automatic Progression has fostered a culture of complacency among students, teachers, and parents. "Students currently lack motivation to strive for academic excellence as their promotion to the next grade is guaranteed regardless of performance," he stated.
The consultation will involve various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, student representatives, heads of schools, unions, and education partners, to evaluate the impacts of the policy.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives to ensure equitable policy outcomes.
The consultation is scheduled for January 16, 2025, at Suva Grammar High School Hall from 9 AM to 12 PM.
The goal is to ensure students achieve required competencies before advancing to the next academic level.
