Health authorities have relocated mothers and expectant mothers at Navua Hospital after the maternity ward was found to have serious structural weaknesses.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu confirmed that public complaints triggered an inspection, which revealed the maternity unit was unsafe.

Patients have now been moved to the hospital’s administration block, which is structurally sound and can accommodate them temporarily.

“We’ve identified some structural weaknesses around the maternity ward. A full reassessment is underway,” Dr. Tudravu said.

The Ministry is working on securing funds and bringing in the necessary expertise to repair and strengthen the hospital’s infrastructure.

Dr. Tudravu assured that a long-term solution will be implemented to restore the maternity ward and provide a safe environment for mothers and newborns.

The reassessment and planning for upgrades are currently ongoing.
