Nemani Calls for Lifetime Bans on Players Testing Positive for Drugs
Former Fiji football captain Maritino Nemani has called on the Fiji Football Association (FFA) to impose lifetime bans on players testing positive for drugs, saying stronger action is needed to keep crime out of the sport.
Nemani expressed shock and disappointment following reports that 34 players tested positive during just three days of the Inter District Championship (IDC), with some reportedly being repeat offenders.
“What is even more disturbing is the revelation that some of these players are repeat offenders. How on earth are we still dealing with repeat offenders? What happened to the disciplinary measures imposed previously?” Nemani questioned.
The former national captain said Fiji FA must take responsibility for the recurring problem, questioning why players continue testing positive at tournaments year after year despite previous disciplinary measures.
“Conducting drug tests is commendable, but testing alone is not the solution. Where is the accountability? Where is the rehabilitation? And most importantly, where are the results?”
Nemani said football should inspire young people and develop future national representatives rather than become associated with repeated drug-related incidents.
“Fiji must keep crime out of sports. Fiji football deserves better. Our young players deserve better. And those entrusted with administering the sport must do better.”
While commending Fiji FA for introducing drug testing, Nemani insisted that meaningful disciplinary action must follow, including lifetime bans from all levels of football.
“Testing alone is not enough to clean up our sport,” he said.
