Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Workplace Relations Jone Martino Nemani has been awarded the title of Industry Professor by the Australian Industry Professors Association (INDPA), in recognition of more than four decades of contribution to strategic workforce development and strategic human resource management at both regional and international levels.
The recognition acknowledges Nemani’s extensive industry experience spanning over 40 years, during which he has played a key role in shaping labour policy, workforce reform, and institutional capacity building across the private and public sector regionally and international.
Nemani has overseen significant reforms within his ministry, which has consistently been cited as one of the government’s strongest performing portfolios. Under his leadership, the ministry has advanced initiatives focused on employment standards, productivity, skills development, and workforce resilience, particularly in a changing economic environment.
Nemani also played a pivotal role in resolving the long-running industrial dispute at the Vatukoula Gold Mines, one of the longest strikes in the world. His leadership contributed to bringing the dispute to an end and to the successful oversight of compensation arrangements for affected workers, marking a significant milestone in Fiji’s industrial relations history.
Nemani said he hoped his journey would encourage young Fijians to believe that opportunities exist beyond traditional career pathways.
“I always aim to inspire young Fijians, especially those coming from a sporting background, to believe that they too can succeed at the highest levels of leadership, including in the executive and professional world,” he said.
Before entering public service, Nemani was the captain of the Suva and Fiji national football team, and played rugby for Nabua & Raiwaqa, a background that no doubt shaped his discipline, teamwork, and leadership style.
The Industry Professor title is awarded by INDPA to professionals recognised for their practical industry expertise, leadership experience, and contribution to developing knowledge and capability within their respective fields.
Nemani’s recognition adds to his long-standing career in private corporate and public service and highlights the growing acknowledgment of industry-based leadership and experience in shaping effective governance and workforce development outcomes.
