Nemani urges greater focus on education and careers beyond sport

Former Fiji soccer captain Maritino Nemani has called for greater emphasis on educating young people and preparing young athletes to build meaningful careers and lives beyond sport.

Nemani, who represented Fiji in soccer and has played both rugby and soccer, said his experiences across the two codes had taught him the importance of ensuring young sportsmen and women are prepared for life beyond the playing field.

“We need to start talking to our children about education, preparing for life and building careers beyond sport,” Nemani said.

“Sport can open doors, but education, discipline and good guidance will help them make the most of every opportunity and contribute meaningfully to society.

“Education is your passport to the future. We must build pathways for our young sportsmen and women so that while they pursue their sporting dreams, they are also preparing themselves for life and a career beyond sport.

“My hope is to pass on the knowledge I have gained and the lessons from the mistakes I have made — to help the next generation make better choices and build brighter futures,” he said.

He said developing young athletes should not only be about producing better sportspeople but also about developing well-rounded individuals who are equipped to support their families, serve their communities and contribute positively to society.

Nemani also warned parents and young rugby players to exercise caution when dealing with overseas rugby recruiters and agents, saying families should seek sound advice and fully understand the opportunities being offered before making major decisions.

“Do not rush into sending your sons overseas without getting proper advice,” Nemani said.

“Ask questions, understand what is being offered and make sure their education and long-term future are also being considered. A sporting opportunity can be a wonderful thing, but we must make sure our young people are protected and properly guided along the way.”
