A new ablution block at Namara District School was officially commissioned by the Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, marking a significant step forward in improving sanitation and learning conditions for students in the Yasawa Islands.

The $200,000 facility was funded and constructed through a partnership between Barefoot Collections and the Drawaqa Trust under the Duavata Project.

Construction began in September 2024 and was completed in March this year.

In his remarks, Minister Radrodro praised the commitment of the school community and project partners.

“This is more than a building—it restores dignity and ensures a safe environment for our children. It reflects what can be achieved when communities and partners work together,” he said.

This visit marked a historic moment for Namara District School, with community members expressing gratitude for the Minister’s support—he is the first Education Minister to visit the school.

Established in 1980 and relocated in 1985 after a landslide, Namara District School now serves 72 primary school students and 16 kindergarten children from the villages of Namara, Yamata, and Naboro. The school continues to perform strongly in both academics and sports, boasting an 89% Year 8 pass rate in 2024.

Minister Radrodro highlighted that the new ablution block aligns with the Ministry’s broader mission to ensure all students across Fiji, including those in remote areas, have access to safe, inclusive, and hygienic learning environments.

The Ministry extended appreciation to Mr. Gareth and the Barefoot team, along with school leaders, parents, and teachers for their ongoing support and efforts to uplift education standards in rural communities.
