New Ice-Making Machines to Boost Northern Fiji’s Fishing Industry

Fishers and commercial operators in the Northern Division are set to benefit from improved access to ice following the installation of three new three-ton ice-making machines at the Labasa Fisheries Jetty.

The equipment, supported by the Government of Japan, is expected to provide a more reliable and affordable supply of ice while strengthening the fisheries cold chain in the North.

The investment will help fishers maintain the quality of their catch, reduce post-harvest losses and minimise spoilage, allowing them to protect the value of their fish products.

The project also includes a 125 KVA backup generator, which will improve the reliability of the facility.

Installation of the machines by Japan-based Nitto Seimo Co. Ltd. began on September 7 and was completed on September 16, 2026.

Following completion, a certificate confirming the successful supply and installation of the equipment was formally handed over to Acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry Saimone Tauvoli by Nitto Seimo representative Michitaka Nakamura.

The official handover and commissioning of the three ice-making machines will take place on September 24, 2026, with the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji expected to attend as Chief Guest.

Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu will receive the equipment on behalf of the Fiji Government and officially commission the new machines.

The project is expected to strengthen fisheries infrastructure in the Northern Division while supporting fishers, communities and businesses that depend on the sector.

The new facilities are also expected to contribute to better fish quality, reduced wastage and improved opportunities for fishing communities across the North.
