New Investments Uplift Schools, Markets, and Rural Communities in Vanua Levu

Major upgrades to schools, markets, and rural infrastructure in Dreketi and Savusavu are transforming the lives of students, farmers, and market vendors in Fiji’s Northern Division.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, alongside Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Peter Roberts, visited completed development projects under the F$56.98 million Australia-funded Cyclone Recovery Program.
The program has rebuilt nine schools across Vanua Levu. In Dreketi, the delegation toured Maramarua and Dreketi Primary Schools, now equipped with new classrooms, teacher quarters, canteens, toilets, walkways, and sports facilities.
“These upgrades mean more than buildings—they provide dignity for our teachers and better learning environments for our children,” said Professor Prasad.
In Savusavu, the DPM toured the newly upgraded Savusavu Market under the UN Women-led Markets for Change initiative. The refurbished facility supports hundreds of women vendors and expands on previous government investments.
Professor Prasad also inspected the mabé pearl and handicraft development project—an initiative involving Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries, Australia’s ACIAR, and local women’s groups—aimed at enhancing sustainable livelihoods and supporting small businesses in the pearl industry across Fiji and Tonga.
The DPM confirmed future plans to improve rural healthcare and infrastructure, including adding a mortuary at Dreketi Health Centre and boosting road and farm access funding in the upcoming national budget.
“Our government is committed to inclusive growth. From scholarship reforms and social welfare increases to raising the minimum wage, we are easing the cost of living—especially for rural communities,” he said.
Professor Prasad thanked the Australian Government for its continued support: “I grew up in Dreketi. It’s always special to return home and see real progress. These projects are improving lives today and shaping a better future.”
