A new Community Police Post will soon be established in Vuna, located on the southern part of Taveuni, as part of efforts to address the ongoing issue of yaqona (kava) theft on the island.

The Fiji Police Force announced the initiative, emphasizing the importance of working closely with key stakeholders, including young farmers, government agencies, and non-state actors.

This collaborative approach aims to put an end to yaqona theft, which has significantly impacted the livelihoods of farmers on Taveuni.

As part of the strategy, the police will enhance their presence in affected areas, focusing on community engagement, regular farm visitations, and increased patrols in theft-prone zones.

These measures are expected to deter criminal activities and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community.

The government has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting yaqona farmers, ensuring they can fully benefit from their harvests.

Yaqona farming is a critical source of income for many families on the island, and safeguarding this industry is seen as essential for local economic growth and stability.

This initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to rural development and improving the safety and well-being of communities across Fiji.
