Residents of Kumi Village in Verata, Tailevu, will no longer face water shortages during dry spells, thanks to the installation of 11 new water tanks funded by the Coalition Government.

Villagers gathered in celebration as the long-awaited request for clean and reliable water access was finally answered. With the new tanks, clean drinking water will now be available year-round — even during droughts.

In addition to the water tanks, two chainsaws were also handed over to assist with clearing debris after natural disasters and supporting ongoing housing construction efforts.

Water shortages have been a major concern for Kumi, as the water supply systems from Viria and Namau have yet to reach the village. The new tanks are expected to ease the burden on families, especially during periods of low rainfall.

With the support, the village aims to build five to six new homes initially, with plans to complete up to 15 houses by the end of the project.

The total cost of the initiative — $25,966 — was fully funded by the Commissioner Central Office through the Self-Help Programme (SHP) and the HRW Program under the 2024–2025 national budget.

The Coalition Government remains committed to empowering rural communities by improving access to essential services and enhancing overall quality of life.
