A family in Taci Village, Noco, Rewa, has been left homeless after a fire destroyed their two-bedroom home on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) said the blaze was reported at around 4.24pm, prompting firefighters from the Nausori Fire Station to respond. By the time crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed, with villagers attempting to contain the flames using buckets of water.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within minutes, with support from the Nakasi Fire Station. An investigation later confirmed that the incident was accidental.

The home belonged to Ms Kesaia Talemaitoga, who lived there with her four children, mother, and mother-in-law. The house was not insured, and damage has been estimated at around $40,000. No injuries were reported.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the rising number of house fires and reminded the public to take extra care as the festive season approaches.

“There’s often an increase in cooking, gatherings, and the use of lights and electrical appliances at this time of year, which increases fire risks,” he said. “Simple habits like checking appliances, switching off stoves, and keeping matches away from children can save lives.”

He also urged motorists to give way to fire trucks, saying delays in traffic continue to affect emergency response times.

The NFA is encouraging the public to report any emergency immediately by calling 910.
