The National Fire Authority (NFA) has welcomed the Coalition Government’s continued support following the announcement of the 2025–2026 National Budget, describing the funding boost as “unprecedented” and a clear recognition of its vital role in national safety.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed gratitude after the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, revealed that $10.6 million has been allocated to the Authority under the Ministry of Local Government’s $35 million budget.
“This allocation is not only generous — it is unprecedented — and we are immensely grateful for this recognition of the NFA’s essential contribution to national safety and resilience,” Sowane said.
The funding includes an $8.46 million operating grant for the NFA’s frontline services and $2.14 million to support its Emergency Ambulance Service, managed through its Paramedic Health Services Department.
Sowane emphasized that the investment reaffirms the Government’s commitment to community protection and emergency preparedness.
“This level of support allows us to expand our capacity — recruiting more firefighters and acquiring the much-needed equipment to respond efficiently and effectively to emergencies across the country,” he said.
The Emergency Ambulance Service allocation will also help increase ambulance availability and expand the recruitment of trained emergency first responders, which Sowane said would enhance the Authority’s ability to deliver life-saving medical assistance.
In accordance with the National Fire Service (Amendment) Act 2009, the Government is required to cover 25% of the NFA’s operational costs — a requirement the 2025–2026 budget exceeds.
The funding will also support the Authority’s ongoing review of fire boundaries, in partnership with key stakeholders, as part of its five-year strategic plan aimed at expanding service coverage to underserved areas.
“This level of support reaffirms the Government’s recognition of our shared responsibility in nation building. It allows us to do more, reach further, and ensure that no Fijian is left behind when it comes to emergency services,” said Sowane.
