The National Federation Party (NFP) has applauded the documentary GIRMIT: The Fields of Sadness, describing it as a deeply moving and courageous portrayal of Fiji’s Girmitiya history.
Directed by Shyam Upadhyay, the film explores the untold struggles and sacrifices of the indentured labourers brought to Fiji, highlighting their resilience and lasting contributions to the nation’s foundation.
Deputy Prime Minister and NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad said the film goes beyond historical documentation, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the strength and perseverance of the Girmitiyas.
“This film is more than a documentary — it is a profound recognition of the sacrifices and resilience of those who helped shape modern Fiji,” said Professor Prasad.
He emphasised that GIRMIT should be embraced not only as a cultural work but also as an educational tool capable of inspiring critical thinking, identity, and pride among Fiji’s youth.
“We must remember, honour, and teach this history. This film has the power to transform how future generations understand our shared past,” he said.
The NFP expressed its full support for bringing the film into schools, communities, and international platforms to ensure the Girmitiya legacy is preserved and celebrated.
