NGO Coalition Condemns Temple Desecrations, Calls for Urgent Action on Rising Hate Crimes
FIJI NEWS

The NGO Coalition on Human Rights has strongly condemned the recent cases of temple desecration in Fiji, describing them as an alarming escalation of religious and racially motivated hatred that threatens national cohesion.
In a statement released yesterday, the Coalition expressed deep concern over incidents in which deities and religious texts were destroyed, saying the crimes were designed to instil fear among entire communities.
“These crimes are a deeply troubling indictment of the environment facing minority communities in Fiji today. We believe they are not isolated incidents, but part of a disturbing trend that undermines safety, dignity, and cohesion,” the Coalition said.
The group warned that the current surge in hate crimes requires not only condemnation but urgent, coordinated action. It has called for swift and thorough police investigations, while also urging political leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric that could fuel further tensions.
“Hate speech leads to hate crimes,” the statement emphasised, adding that the growing role of social media in amplifying hostility must also be confronted.
The Coalition stressed that protecting communities from hate will require more than words, calling for concrete measures including resources, training, education, and political will.
“No one should have to live in fear because of who they are or where they come from. These abhorrent attacks harm individuals, communities, and Fijian society as a whole,” the statement said.
The Coalition reaffirmed its solidarity with those affected and reminded the Government of its duty to ensure equal protection for all citizens.
The NGO Coalition on Human Rights is made up of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (Chair), Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, Citizens’ Constitutional Forum, femLINKpacific, Social Empowerment and Education Program, and Diverse Voices and Action (DIVA) for Equality Fiji. The Pacific Network on Globalisation (PANG) is an observer.
