NGO Coalition raises concerns over planned opening of Israeli embassy in Fiji

The NGO Coalition on Human Rights in Fiji (NGOCHR) has raised serious concerns over reports that Israel is expected to open an embassy in Fiji in April 2026, following Fiji’s recent diplomatic alignment with Israel.
In a statement, the coalition said the move risks undermining international law and Fiji’s long-standing commitment to human rights, multilateralism, and respect for international legal norms.
NGOCHR noted that the status of Jerusalem remains unresolved under international law and is the subject of numerous United Nations resolutions and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice, which caution states against actions that may imply recognition of unlawful occupation.
The coalition also pointed to ongoing findings by United Nations bodies and international human rights organisations documenting serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
According to NGOCHR, Fiji’s decision to host an Israeli embassy could be perceived internationally as a tacit endorsement or complicity in those alleged violations.
“Fiji has historically upheld principles of peace, decolonisation, and respect for international law,” the coalition said, warning that the diplomatic shift could erode the country’s moral standing and contradict its international obligations.
NGOCHR has called on the Fijian Government to reconsider the decision, recommit to a rights-based foreign policy, and ensure that Fiji’s international relations align with principles of justice, accountability, and respect for international law.
