Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has clearly said that Chinese military bases are not welcome in Fiji or the Pacific region.

Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Rabuka was asked if China should be allowed to build a military base in the Pacific. He replied, “Who would welcome them? Not Fiji.”

When asked if he would try to stop China from setting up a base, Rabuka said, “As long as I'm prime minister, yes. And I think that China understands that well.”

He also said that China does not need military bases in the Pacific to project power.

“They have proven that they do not need a base outside China to be able to launch what they have into any other area of the world,” Rabuka explained.

Rabuka said Pacific nations are trying to manage China’s growing power and influence while remaining peaceful and friendly.

“We are friendly to all and enemies to none,” he said.

Although he praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for lifting people out of poverty, Rabuka does not believe China is trying to build a base in the Pacific right now.

His views are different from the Australian government, which believes China is trying to grow its security presence in the region. Experts say Rabuka may not fully see China’s long-term military goals.

Rabuka also suggested that Fiji and Australia sign a new agreement or treaty to strengthen their partnership and protect it from changes in politics.

He said he will talk more about his “Ocean of Peace” plan with other Pacific leaders in September. The plan calls for respect, peace, and no outside pressure or threats.

“This means respect for the Pacific way,” he said. “Respect for norms and law. No coercion.”

China has faced global criticism for helping governments like Iran and Pakistan, which are accused of funding terrorist groups. China has also threatened Taiwan with military action, raising concerns about peace and safety in the world.

For now, Fiji is making its position clear: No Chinese military bases.
