No to Deep Sea Mining in Fiji
FIJI NEWS

A recent report from Monash University, commissioned by the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), has highlighted significant gaps in Fiji's legislation regarding Deep Sea Mining (DSM).
Although DSM activities have not yet commenced, existing legal loopholes could potentially allow them in the future, posing risks to marine ecosystems and local communities.
FCOSS Executive Director Vani Catanasiga raised these concerns at the Pacific Blue Line Regional Meeting last week, stressing the urgent need for legal reforms to safeguard Fiji's waters12. Key points from the report include:
Fiji lacks a legally binding moratorium on DSM, despite commitments made since 2020.
Current laws permit exploration but do not adequately regulate exploitation.
The cultural and spiritual connections of indigenous communities to the ocean must be protected.
The time to act is NOW! FCOSS is advocating for a legally binding ban on DSM by amending key laws to protect our oceans for future generations.
