Norovirus Cases on the Rise
FIJI NEWS

Norovirus, a highly contagious stomach virus, is on the rise according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Recent data shows a significant increase in outbreaks, with 91 reported in one week compared to 69 the previous week.
Norovirus causes gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and is responsible for millions of illnesses annually.
Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician, explains that norovirus spreads through direct contact with an infected person, contaminated surfaces, and shared food or utensils.
Symptoms usually resolve within one to two days, but severe dehydration can occur.
There is no specific treatment, so staying hydrated is key.
Preventive measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding food preparation while symptomatic, and disinfecting contaminated surfaces.
Practicing good food safety can help reduce the spread of norovirus and other foodborne illnesses.
