“Never be ashamed to walk away from drugs. Real strength is in saying no!”

That was the powerful message from Sailosi Malimali, a Year 7 student of Lami Primary School, as students across Fiji took the lead in launching the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) week-long awareness programme.

Malimali, who lives in Lami, said he has seen first-hand how drug use has affected lives in his community. “Even though I’m still young, I’ve seen how some people have made the wrong choices and destroyed their future,” he shared.

The IDADAIT program, which aims to raise awareness on the dangers and effects of drug and substance abuse, was officially launched in the Central Division by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, at the Suva Civic Centre. The Western Division launch was led by the Minister for Policing, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua.

Deputy Prime Minister Gavoka stressed that the fight against drug abuse is not just a matter of law enforcement, but a national effort that must include education, community engagement, and strong values.

“Fiji must be safe,” he said, adding that every citizen has a role to play in protecting future generations from the dangers of illicit drugs.

IDADAIT Week activities will be integrated into the school curriculum, encouraging students to participate in projects, discussions, and creative events that promote awareness and build resilience against peer pressure and drug-related influences.
