Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has distanced the Opposition Caucus from controversial social media posts made by Member of Parliament Ketan Lal, which could impact tariff negotiations with the USA and further increase the cost of living in Fiji.

In a response to Duavata News, Seruiratu made it clear that Lal’s actions were not reflective of the Opposition’s stance, stating:

“Although Hon Ketan Lal is a Member of Parliament, his post is personal and has nothing to do with the Opposition. He is free to make his own comments and express his personal views on issues, and it does not necessarily mean that it's coming from the office of the Opposition caucus.”

Lal came under scrutiny after mocking the U.S. Embassy in Suva on social media, just days after returning from the “2025 Programme for Youth Representatives from Pacific Island Countries”, a 20-day initiative hosted by China’s Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office.

However, Seruiratu also urged the MP to think about what he says, as such irresponsible comments can be harmful to ordinary Fijians who are battling a cost of living crisis.

“As an MP, he needs to be aware of his wider responsibility, knowing that as a public official, he will always be under scrutiny.”

The Opposition Leader also reaffirmed bipartisan support for government-led negotiations with the United States over proposed tariffs, emphasising that the cost-of-living crisis affects all Fijians regardless of political alignment.

“Government is dealing with the US tariff issue, and we in Parliament have given our support in the negotiations being undertaken, as we in the Opposition are equally concerned—as cost of living does not differentiate, as it affects us all.”

Ketan Lal has yet to respond to questions from Duavata News about his posts.
